Here are my top 10 easy tips to refresh your space with delightful scents.

1. Essential Oils

Why Essential Oils?

Essential oils are a perfect way to make your home smell good…naturally. These oils are extracted from plants which makes them natural air fresheners and can also have a wide range of therapeutic benefits. The beauty of essential oils is that you can choose different scents depending on your mood or the time of day.

How to Use Them:

  • Diffuser: Purchase an essential oil diffuser. Add a few drops of any oil, like lavender oil for relaxation or lemon oil for freshness, and let it diffuse in your home. Some even have lighting options for an even more relaxing atmosphere.

This diffuser has an automatic shut off and comes with 7 different color lights. You can get it on Amazon

  • DIY Sprays: Mix essential oils with water in a spray bottle to make a diy home made freshener for your home. Use oils like eucalyptus or peppermint for an energizing boost. You can also try adding a little something extra to help the oil mix better with water, like witch hazel!

Experiment with different mixtures and try to find a combination of blends that you like the most. Some of the most popular blends include lavender and chamomile for relaxation, or citrus and mint for freshness.

2. Scented Candles

The Power of Candles

Scented candles are a classic choice for making your home smell delicious. Candles not only smell good, but they also add coziness to your space.

Picking the Right Candles:

  • Natural Ingredients: Try to choose candles made from natural waxes, like soy or beeswax, these burn cleaner and give off fewer toxins than other regular candles. Another thing to keep in mind is choosing phthalate-free candles, these are eco-friendly and reduces exposure to toxic chemicals which can disrupt your hormones (most people don’t know this!) Also, consider purchasing candles using essential oils as the scent.
  • Types Of Scents: Choose scents that best suit the mood you want to create. Vanilla and cinnamon bring coziness, these scents make your home feel more comfy. For a fresher place, citrus scents are my favorite. Seasonal scents, like pumpkin spice for fall and fresh pine during winter are just perfect!

3. Add in Fresh Flowers and Plants

Fresh flowers not only bring beauty to a home but also add fragrance and if you decide to go for plants, they naturally clean up your air! (thanks Mother Nature!!)

  • Flowers: These include roses, lilies, or jasmine bouquets for their lovely smell. Place them near areas where you spend the most time so you can get the most out of their fragrance.
  • Plants: Herbs like basil, mint, or rosemary add freshness and can also be used in the kitchen!

4. Air Out Your Home!

Fresh Air Matters

Sometimes the best way to make your home smell good is to simply let fresh air in. Open your windows and doors to let the old air out and the fresh air in, this can also remove any stale odor in your home!

How to Air Out Your Home:

  • Routine: Make it a routine to open your window every day for at least 10-15 minutes, especially in the morning when the air is cool and fresh. Its the little things that make a big difference in air quality.
  • Cross Ventilation: Open your windows on opposite sides of your house or apartment, this helps with air circulation.

If it’s cold outside, try opening your windows in the morning for just a short period to get the fresh air in without cooling your home too much! If you don’t want to open your windows, you can just use fans to help with air circulation.

5. Use Baking Soda

Good Old Natural Odor Neutralizer

Baking soda works as one of the best odor absorbers to get rid of unwanted smells in your home, it’s pretty cheap and doesn’t contain chemicals which makes it an excellent way to eliminate odors naturally.

How to Use Baking Soda:

  • Fridge Freshener: Place an opened box of baking soda in your refrigerator, this works by neutralizing the smell of food. Make sure to replace it every three months for best results.
  • Carpet Deodorizer: Sprinkle a bit of baking soda on carpets and let it sit for a few hours before vacuuming for a fresh and odor-free surroundings. Also, in case you have pets, this stuff works wonders.

6. Make Your Own Potpourri

Potpourri is a low key way of “perfuming” your home and it can also be used as decoration! With potpourri, you can customize the scent based on your preferences, and it’s made of natural materials which makes it that much better because who actually wants their home to smell like chemicals?

How You Can Make Your Own Potpourri:

  • Ingredients: Potpourri is made of flowers, herbs, and spices that are dried, a popular mix is lavender and rose petals. You can also spice up things and add cinnamon sticks and citrus fruit peels if you want that extra kick… now I to make one as I’m typing this!!! You can customize it to your liking and even add essential oils
  • Mix and Store: Mix it all together in a bowl and place them in different areas of your home. You can also put them in pretty bowls or vases that go well with your home decor.

7. Cook with Scented Ingredients

Cooking and Aromas

Cooking can fill your home with delicious and pleasant scents. Have you ever cooked onions and olive oil? That’s a smell I personally enjoy (definitely not for everyone). Some ingredients not only taste great, but they can also create a delicious scent in your home that sticks

Cooking Tips:

  • Herbs and Spices: Use fresh herbs, like basil and thyme, or spices, like cinnamon and cloves, these add a lot of fragrance (and taste!) to your dishes.
  • Simmer Spices: Let lemon slices, cinnamon sticks, and cloves simmer in a pot of water on the stove for a natural, homemade air freshener that smells sweet and delicious!

Bake cookies or bread, there’s nothing quite like the smell of freshly baked goods coming from your oven. YUM!

8. Regular Cleaning

Clean Home, Clean Smell

A clean home is important for it to have a pleasant smell. Regular cleaning helps to remove dust and dirt, along with smells that might accumulate over time.

Cleaning Tips:

  • Regular Vacuuming: Vacuum carpet, rugs, and upholstered furniture to remove any lingering odors. (Bonus tip) pay a little more attention to those areas where your pets like to hang out.
  • Wash Your Fabrics: Regularly wash curtains, cushion covers, and throws to keep them smelling fresh. Think about including fabric fresheners!

You can also add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to your cleaning products (yes, I love essential oils!), this will make cleaning all the much more fun and productive.

9. Scented Drawer Liners

I don’t often see people bring this up but scented drawer liners keep your clothes and linens smelling fresh, this gives you a pleasant surprise each time you open your drawer.

How You Can Use Them:

  • Pick a scent: You can get the liners infused with the scent of lavender or citrus, you can also do it yourself by spraying plain paper with some water mixed with essential oils and letting it dry.
  • Replace Regularly: After a few months, replace with a new set of liners to keep things fresh

You can also place bags of dried herbs or even potpourri in your drawers for the same result!

10. Buy an Air Purifier

Air Quality

Air purifiers are godsend (especially with my allergies), they help get rid of air impurities and unpleasant odors, giving your home a fresher scent. This is also must-have if you suffer from allergies (like me), or any sensitivities.

How to Pick the Perfect Purifier:

  • HEPA Filters: Go for filters using the HEPA technology. These filters are proven to trap particles, including dust, pollen, and pet dander.
  • Activated Carbon Filters: These filters are amazing at absorbing odors! Some air purifiers combine both types for an even better result.

This one is made of both HEPA and activated carbon filter. You can get it on Amazon

Making your home smell good is actually super simple. With these tips you can easily fill your home with pleasant scents, whether you’re a fan of essential oils, fresh flowers, regular cleaning, or cooking with aromatic ingredients, each step can contribute to a pleasant smelling home.
